GOD’S WORD THROUGH THE BOOK OF PSALMS

By Fr. Paul Stewart

CHET ח

Psalm 119: 57-64

  1. You are my portion O Lord, I have said I would keep your words.
  1. I entreated Your favor with my whole heart. Be merciful to me according to your word.
  1. I thought about my ways. And turned my feet to your testimonies.
  1. I made haste and did not delay to keep Your commandments.
  1. The cords of the wicked have bound me, But I have not forgotten Your Law.
  1. At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You. Because of your righteous judgments of those who fear You.
  1. I am a companion of all those who fear You, And of those who keep Your precepts.
  1. The earth, O Lord is full of Your mercy. Teach me Your statutes.

Each day we have work, jobs, appointments, responsibilities, and commitments, and it is so easy to get whelmed over.  The more we take onto ourselves, the more we tax our ability to complete them all.  “I entreat Your favor with my whole heart.  Be merciful to me according to your word.”  This favor comes, The Holy Spirit opens favor to us to make our way easier.  Someone we need to talk to is calling us; something we need to buy is on sale; if our car is about to break down, it does in a convenient place.

The Lord covers us with this grace, His Holy Spirit is above us and around us.  Wherever our feet carry us, this canopy of love moves with us.  “The earth, O Lord, is full of Your mercy, Teach me Your statutes.”

The word is not a code of rights and wrong, rather testimonies of His love, mercy, and grace.  He likens you to His bride, sending the Holy Spirit to remind us, that He will never leave nor forsake those who have made Him their portion.

GODS WORD THROUGH THE BOOK OF PSALMS

By Fr. Paul Stewart

ZAYIN ז

Psalm 119: 49-56

  1. Remember the word to Your Servant, Upon which You have caused me to hope.
  2. This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life.
  3. The proud have me in great derision, Yet I do not turn aside from Your law.
  4. I remembered Your judgments of old, O Lord, And have comforted myself.
  5. Indignation has taken hold of me. Because of the wicked, who forsake Your law.
  6. Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.
  7. I remember Your name in the night O Lord, And I keep your law.
  8. This has become mine Because I kept Your precepts.

David had come to a place where the word became his greatest comfort!  He faced many accusations against him, and through these trials, he turned not from the law of God.  It seems we are always in some kind of conflict and we are ready with a sword to combat them.  Often our zealousness causes us to react in ways that outside of Gods word.  Peter pulled out his sword and cut the soldiers ear off, but Jesus quickly spoke, this is not my way.   During the night we ponder the day, wishing like Peter that our choices were different.

David had hope, the word taught him the judgments of God.  He comforted himself in knowing His Lord’s mercy. Peter after the denial was haunted- but Jesus came through after the Resurrection; “tell Peter too.”

The Holy Spirit reminds us that every promise of the Father, the things He spoke to us and said we would do, are restored through Jesus.  This is the house of our pilgrimage, the call to us; walk, and be lifted up by the Spirit of God.

Holy Spirit

By Father Paul Stewart

BEIT ב

Psalms 119: 9-16

9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.
10 I seek you with all my heart; don’t let me stray from your mitzvot.
11 I treasure your word in my heart, so that I won’t sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, ADONAI! Teach me your laws.
13 I proclaim with my mouth all the rulings you have spoken.
14 I rejoice in the way of your instruction more than in any kind of wealth.
15 I will meditate on your precepts and keep my eyes on your ways.
16 I will find my delight in your regulations. I will not forget your word.

David’s life was changed when the Lord called him.  Our lives have been changed because the Lord has called us too.  Now like David we see this favor of God in our lives and with it unbelievable struggles.  How do I live now?  King David asked the question, “How can a young man keep his way pure?”

We live in a nation that has risen from rags to riches. No other country has experienced the favor we have here.  A missionary from Africa standing at the entrance of one of our mega food stores said, “What is this!”  He could hardly believe his eyes.  With all the abundance we are like kings in a palace, the potential we have to do well, to help.  However the temptations are all around us, worldly desires, weaknesses, and craving of the flesh, power, prominence and position, luring us away from God.

When these temptations and troubles arose in King David’s life, he knew the only safe haven was the Word of God.  The Lord said He would write this Word on our hearts and mind. He would give us His desires- How?  By the Holy Spirit.  Come Holy Spirit we need you!  Take us into the safe harbor of your Word.

The World full of Distractions

noahs-ark-fr-nathanileNoah teaching February 19, 2014This evening we are going to read

Genesis 8:15-22

We are all familiar with the story of Noah, how God used him to deliver a remnant thru the destruction of the flood, brought on by the evil found in the hearts of men. Tonight I want to look at it from the perspective of how it relates to us as brides who have made promises to live vows of spiritual poverty, chastity, and obedience.

We live in a world full of distractions. It is a fast-paced and often chaotic place. Yet, as those who have said to the Lord that we want to separate ourselves from that world and enter into a closer place with Him. The story of Noah has special meaning to us as we live in these times when we realize that we are living in perilous times when signs point toward His return soon, and the world is overwhelmed with violence as it was in the days of Noah. Also, we realize the hour is late for the world as watch right become wrong and wrong become right in the eyes of the world.

First, we see the obedience of Noah as he heard the word of God and acted upon it. We see the poverty in the life of a man who, in acting upon the word of God certainly brought ridicule and hurt to himself and his family, building a boat for a flood when no one understood the concept of the flood. Chastity is evident in the life of Noah as he had lived a life before God in the midst of the sin he was surrounded by.

Tonight we have prepared ourselves to receive from, and minister to, Christ through a period of silence. As I said earlier, we live in a loud, distracting world and so, in order to hear His voice, we must learn to quiet ourselves and shut out the noise around us. Then, having quieted ourselves to hear we too, like Noah, must be willing to obey and act upon what he is calling us to do.

Then what did He do with Noah? He brought him into the ark, the place of safety. He was separated from the world. Are we willing to be separate from the world as God is asking us to. After he had built the ark, Noah had to get into it along with his family and the animals that God sent, he was shut into the ark. Do you think that Ark was a pleasant place? It had to smell. It had to be crowded. But God was working a miracle every moment in that Ark. There is no way they could have air to breathe or food to eat for all those animals plus the people without it. There is no way they could have all been in there and had peace.  When we follow God and allow Him to separate us from the world, He performs miracles in our lives moment by moment.

Then, after more than a year in the ark, and knowing that the land was exposed, he still waited for God’s word to open the door of the ark and come out. He was patient and obedient lest he comes out and sinks in the mud. How often do we find ourselves stuck in the mud in our lives when we are not seeking his direction for the moves in our lives?

Finally, after they finally emerged what did he do? He built an altar, he set up a place to meet God and offered sacrifice to him in. Do we recognize ourselves in Noah tonight or are we caught in the noise of the world, unwilling to enter in and separate ourselves to Him?
